Design Story: Pluma Stool
Designer Steven Bukowski describes how he created his award-winning Pluma Stool.
The Pluma Stool was inspired not only by traditional milking stools, but by a lamp I had previously designed, the Pluma Lamp. Its simple, yet bubbly and playful appearance, was adapted to the milking stool form to serve as an extra seat, small side table, or plant stand.
Working closely with the Areaware design team, we defined the core aspects of the design. Not only was versatility a key component of the products, but we wanted to make sure it could flat pack for more efficient shipping and be easy to assemble.
After many dozens of sketches we narrowed it down to the final design. We had a short deadline to get this project going, so I opted to prototype the first few stools myself in my studio, instead of waiting several weeks for the factory to complete it. This allowed us to quickly make changes and gauge the results immediately.
Working with the Areaware team is always a blast, and I couldn’t be happier with the finished design.
