Design Story: Pod Low Table

How a design inspired by garden fences can bring endless decorating possibilities to your home.

Hanna's original design for the Pod Low Table.

The journey of creating the Pod Low Table (originally called Pole Pedestal) began with a simple idea: capturing the beauty and charm of old garden fences in a turned-wood form. This inspiration led me to explore how to bring that outdoor elegance into interiors.

A colorful stack of Hanna's painted prototypes.

After finalizing the initial concept, I ordered a series of prototypes and was captivated by their three-dimensional form. I painted them in a wide range of colors to test their visual impact. These vibrant prototypes traveled to exhibitions across Europe, debuting in Helsinki, Paris, Stockholm, and Switzerland before making their way to the United States. Everywhere they went, the Pod Table offered a refreshing and playful way to showcase plants and decor.

Drawings for the flat-packed, slimmed-down version of Pod Low Table.

Through these exhibitions, I connected with Areaware and we began discussing how to refine the design into a market-ready product. Our collaboration focused on making it flat-packed for easy storage and shipping. This process led us to slim down the silhouette, balancing practicality and visual appeal.

3D renderings helped smooth out details during development.

Throughout development, I paid meticulous attention to details: the perfect curve on every corner, color nuances, and smooth connections that make assembly easy and tool-free. Crafting high-quality products in small batches is essential to me, and I wanted every aspect of the design to feel just right. The final product, thanks to Areaware's collaboration, is now at home in interiors across the globe.

With every Pod Table, I aim to bring a sense of joy and satisfaction to customers who value thoughtful design in their living spaces. I wanted the product to have a sculptural quality, making it an ideal piece for displaying multiple units as well as a standalone accent. The Pod Table allows for versatile styling—whether you choose one or several, each piece contributes a distinctive character to the decor. Use it as a base for a stack of books, a low side table, or to elevate an art piece, adding vibrancy and creativity to any space.
